She says the creator of The Addams Family would have mixed feelings about the continued success of his New Yorker magazine creations. Davis tells Den of Geek the artist would have been happily surprised by the characters’ endurance, “and very disappointed that he missed out on all the really big money.” The biographer also believes the films and series slightly missed their marks....

Angelina Jolie heads up the sequel to 2014’s successful origin story, where we find Maleficent travelling to Aurora’s wedding to enjoy the nuptials, but when she runs into Prince Phillip’s mum (Michelle Pfeiffer) and finds out that she’s planning to destroy the land’s fairies, Maleficent enters Rage Mode. As you would. There’s also the second instalment of the Percy Jackson film series, Sea of Monsters, to watch in June....

The most obvious example of failure is the Doctor not ‘winning’, or doing so in a way that doesn’t meet their ideals (say, the story’s antagonist(s) succeeding in some way, or the Doctor only defeating them through violence). It’s rare that an antagonist will completely achieve their aims (Rasmussen in ‘Sleep No More’, for example, whose Sandmen-enabling Morpheus process was still broadcast despite the Doctor’s interventions), but there are several victories that feel hollow or partial....

The dust has now settled on the Earth-shattering finale of Doctor Who series 12, and in hindsight, not all my predictions were on the money. It was hasty to say “The big reveal in the finale is almost certainly something to do with Rassilon”, or that “There’s no way the Ruth Doctor can be an incarnation before Hartnell” (the jury is still out on that one, by the way). Meanwhile, other people have had better luck with their predictions....

Doctor Who, as a format, requires an intrinsic joyfulness in its stories to be so adored. If adventures become too continually grim, or not sufficiently fun, then ultimately there’ll be a tipping point where it becomes implausible for the story to continue. Why, ultimately, would the character keep travelling if they weren’t enjoying it? And even if they did, would this be something that would sustain a family audience? It’s not that you can’t have darkness in Doctor Who, it’s just that it can’t be sustained and eventually something has to give....

The second half of the Doctor Who Season 12 premiere dropped some major bombs, setting off ripples in the Who universe that could change the show forever. It all began in “Part One,” of course, when “O” (the brilliant Sacha Dhawan) revealed himself to be The Master, another Gallifreyan who has served as one of the Doctor’s primary antagonists since Classic Who days. In “Part Two,” The Master’s plan to wipe out humanity alongside tech CEO Daniel Barton and the Kasavin alien race fails, but he still manages to devastate the Doctor, revealing to her that their homeworld of Gallifrey has been decimated....
