It’s a surprisingly controversial subject among fans. Eight licensed feature films form the franchise, and there are some areas of common consensus. For instance, it is unlikely anyone is going to storm the comments if we say we can disregard the Alien vs. Predator movies for reasons of them being bad. An area of less certainty is the Prometheus/Alien: Covenant duology. Directed by Alien’s Ridley Scott, you would think these had a cast-iron claim on canon-hood, and yet disregarding the films’ problems, they don’t feel like they are interested in the things that a proper Alien story is interested in....

Archer Season 8 Episode 1 “Oh death, where is thy sting?” That’s the first line uttered in “No Good Deed,” the first episode of Archer: Dreamland. It’s fairly weak as far as fakeouts go. Sure, we remember the a bullet-ridden Archer laying face down in Veronica Dean’s pool but that doesn’t mean we’ll buy that the opening moments of this episode represent his funeral. Sure enough the funeral is for Woodhouse, one of the several times the show goes out of its way to honor the dearly departed George Coe in this episode....

Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 13 “We’ve got to at least get these kids out of the forest…” In an episode where Levi, Zeke, and other literal children are currently in a forest, “Children of the Forest’s” namesake is actually in reference to a metaphor that’s cast by Sasha’s father. Mr. Blouse laments that despite Sasha’s nature and best intentions, the very nature of her pursuit was inevitably cursed. Sasha came back with victories, but she’s someone that would never completely remove themselves from the line of fire....

Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 9 “Welcome to Paradis Island…” Attack on Titan’s final season has expertly played with the viewers’ expectations, but “Brave Volunteers” feels like the most atypical episode of what’s been an extremely unpredictable season. On one level, an episode that’s largely set in the past and is almost entirely designed as an expository device shouldn’t be a very satisfying installment of Attack on Titan. The anime has done episodes like this before, but it actually feels appropriate for it to pump its breaks a little and take stock of everything that’s happened so far now that the season has passed the halfway point....

It’s amazing there aren’t more films riffing on the subject: something that clearly occurred to first-time director Blair Erickson, inspiring this, his debut feature. Banshee Chapter is a loopy, lo-fi conspiracy horror taking in college researchers, secret government facilities and a heavily self-medicated writer who, while nominally fictional, seems very familiar. The film even reaches for an air of authenticity by including genuine footage of the scientists involved in MKUltra and the unveiling of its true extent (Bill Clinton makes an appearance in some White House press-conference news footage)....

Barry Season 3 Episode 1 Three years is an eternity in TV time, but that’s how long we’ve been without Barry, Bill Hader’s immaculately produced hitman-turned-actor dramedy for HBO. As with all good things, COVID-19 impacted that show’s production schedule, but allowed Hader and co-creator Alec Berg more time to polish scripts and chart the season’s trajectory. That extra time feels apparent in the Season 3 premiere, “Forgiving Jeff,” (the title of which is stylized in all lower-case as all Barry episodes are) which reestablishes status quo with our returning characters, but also addresses last season’s big cliffhanger....
