20th Century Fox will, at long last, release The New Mutants on Digital HD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, November 17. The Marvel Comics adaptation film, directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), who co-wrote the script with Knate Lee, became one of the few post Q1 2020 movies that saw a big screen release, having hit theaters on August 28; a run that currently tallies at $42 million worldwide, obviously impeded by the limited number of theaters still operating and their necessary reduced capacity. Thusly, those who didn’t endure the COVID wilderness of theaters to see the film will get their chance soon enough. Deleted Scenes While the nixing of the April date and resonating hype for July’s Comic-Con virtual panel seemed to foretell a VOD release, the film ultimately hit theaters on the aforementioned adjusted August date. While the buildup to said theatrical release touted an iconoclast of a comic book movie—manifesting as an amalgam of sorts combining a psychologically intense horror offering with elements of teen classics like The Breakfast Club—reviews were generally of the opinion that it was not worth years of wait. Moreover, the film stands as a relic of a very different time in the comic book movie genre, intended as a spinoff for Fox’s long-running X-Men film franchise, which ended up concluding (unsuccessfully,) with 2019’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix, thus leaving the spinoff in a continuity lurch. Indeed, such a notion was cemented with Disney having since acquired Fox, with designs now in place to reboot the X-Men under the auspices of Marvel Studios. Nevertheless, the home release of The New Mutants should satiate the curiosity of fans of Marvel movie mutant mayhem, especially with the film’s impressive cast lineup of ever-rising film star Anya Taylor-Joy, Queen of the South’s Alice Braga, Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams and Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton, joined by rising talent like Blu Hunt and Henry Zaga. The November 17 home release will see the film available on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD formats.
